Who is your favourite member of the Doom Patrol??
Saturday, August 21, 2010
Feral Rita, Nazi Larry and Steampunk Cliff?!?
Giffen: It's basically, "Whatever happened to Fast Forward from Arcudi's Doom Patrol?" You know, the guy they jokingly called Negative Man because of his attitude?
It's sort of involves him and alternate realities and things that can come through doors that are open in alternate realities.
So we're having some fun with Doom Patrol doppelgangers. Feral Rita, and Nazi Larry, and Steampunk Cliff.

Matthew Clark interview (Oct 09)
"So first we have Robotman, the anchor of the group, and really the heart of every version of the DOOM PATROL. With his look, I went with the bike shorts - something that screamed 'athlete'. I kind of picture him in his human form (If I was to draw that, it would be David Beckham as the model). I tried to bring him back to the robot form without muscle definition: he’s hydraulics, wires and gears. The piping on the face and chest really stems from the 50’s robot, which I thought would be a nice touch.
Negative Man: with his look, I wanted him to scream 'pilot'. That’s who he is and was from the beginning. Also I wanted to get back to the original color scheme from the first half dozen issues which they wore green. So Larry got the godphers and military turtleneck wool sweater and the bandage tails implying the scarf. His look is very 1930's/1940’s RAF pilot.
Elasti Woman: With Rita I wanted her outfit to be the red and white that she was known to wear. I ditched the mini skirt for obvious reasons as we are really playing around with her size changing and the new outfit also has a purpose that will be further explained in upcoming issues. I was looking at 1960’s Diana Rigg as Emma Peele from the Avengers TV series. I updated it a bit but very much in that vein. Plus she’s our babe and I wanted to show that part of her off more. She’s a movie star with several movies under her belt (see the background of her home for which movies she’s done. More will be showing up)."

Who is Brian Keene?
How does this relate to Doom Patrol? Well, Keith Giffen recently revealed that Giffen himself will be the artist for #16, the designated "change-of-pace" issue. So who will be the writer? The following tidbit came from Brian Keene's website......
"As regular readers of Doom Patrol know, the legendary Keith Giffen has been writing the comic’s current incarnation. But he says here that he’s drawing issue #16. Very strange. If Keith is drawing issue #16, who is writing it? And in the same post, he asks people if they’ve heard of horror author Brian Keene. Why would he do that? He also tells Newsarama that #16 will be a “special change-of-pace” issue. Cryptic fellow, that Keith Giffen. Likes to call me up and say things like, “Men name their penises because they don’t want a total stranger making all their decisions for them…”
*I can’t confirm or deny anything."

Doom Patrol #13 review
Rita's story is clearly one of tragedy, and the creative team have successfully conveyed that tragedy through the writing and artwork. No character is left untouched by the revelations in this issue and very few stones are left unturned. I also find it so poignant that no original member is exactly as they used to be - they've all faced their own 'doom', and survived through it, thanks to the Chief.
This is undoubtedly my favourite issue of the series. It made me feel for Rita, her situation, her past and her present. In a world where so many comics are forgotten, this is one to be remembered.
